How to teach letters with games? ›

Beach Ball Alphabet Game

All you need for this activity is an inflatable beach ball and a sharpie marker. Write each letter of the alphabet randomly all over the ball and toss it to your child. Ask them to name the letter closest to their left thumb. The next person they pass the ball to must do the same.

Generally, it is played with the “no proper names” rule, so no “Africa” or “Allison” for “A", but anything else goes. You go through the entire alphabet one person at a time, and all you have to do is say ANY word that starts with the next letter of the alphabet.

Alphabet activities are a great method for your youngster to become more familiar with letters, both visually and verbally.

Letters that occur frequently in simple words (e.g., a, m, t) are taught first. Letters that look similar and have similar sounds (b and d) are separated in the instructional sequence to avoid confusion. Short vowels are taught before long vowels.
