One of the most fun elements of World of Warcraft: Dragonflight is the new dragonriding feature. This refreshed flying system has revitalized the way you can travel around the Dragon Isles. The system allows you to ride four different species of dragon mounts, only available in the Dragon Isles.

What’s more is that these dragon mounts feature an array of customization options, so you can make your dragon as unique as you like. You can change colors, add spikes, modify your tail, and alter many other features. As part of the fun, you have to unlock customization options, so we’ve put together a guide to help you.

Types Of Dragonriding Mounts And How To Unlock Them
There are four different dragon mount species you can unlock in Dragonflight.

These updated models do resemble mounts previously available in the game. However, they have unique touches to them. Each of these dragon mounts is unlocked through leveling within the Dragon Isles.
You’ll start by unlocking the Renewed Proto-Drake early on during your adventure. As you learn how the dragonriding system works through a series of quests, you’ll be rewarded with the proto-drake upon completion.
Dragonriding unlocks are account-wide, aside from dragonriding skill. When you start leveling on a different character, you’ll have to level up your riding skill again. When you step off the boat as you arrive on the Dragon Isles, you’ll be able to use all mounts instantly.
Where To Customise Your Dragon
To customize your dragon mount, you’ll need to go to the customization platforms — the Rostrums of Transformation. All you need to do is get close enough to interact, and you’ll open the dragon customization screen.
There are also quests available from dragonriding trainers who’ll teach you about customization.
Where To Find The Rostrums Of Transformation
There is a platform in each of the four Dragon Isles zones. On your map, you’ll be able to see a faint dragon icon to mark their location.

How To Customise Your Dragon
Once you arrive at the customization pad, you’ll be able to see four different dragon species icons on your right. (Some may be locked if you haven’t completed the quests to unlock them). This is how you select which mount you want to customize.
You can save up to ten different looks, or roll the dice and randomize for a fun surprise.
All your dragon mounts are available as four separate mounts. So, you don’t have to come back to the pad every time you want to change species.
Dragon Mount Skin Colours
Currently, there are only five base colors for your dragons. Each of these is based on the five main dragonflights within the game. These are:
- The Red Dragonflight, Protectors of Life
- The Green Dragonflight, Guardians of the Emerald Dream and Nature
- The Blue Dragonflight, Masters of Magic
- The Bronze Dragonflight, Keepers of Time
- The Black Dragonflight, Warders of the Earth.
When you unlock each of the mounts, they each have a different base color. You’ll have to unlock the others. The starting colors for each mount are as follows:
- Renewed Proto-Drake – Red
- Windborne Velocidrake – Green
- Highland Drake – Blue
- Cliffside Wylderdrake – Bronze
How To Unlock Dragon Customizations
To unlock dragon customizations, you’ll need to locate items known as Drakewatcher Manuscripts. These come from a variety of places. Some are found in treasure, some are quest rewards, and others can be bought from vendors.
There are even two unique skins you can collect from PvP and raiding.
When you loot these items, you can right-click on them to learn them. These new customization options will then be available at a Rostrum of Transformation.
We’ll be using co-ordinates for some locations, so we strongly advise downloading the Co-ordinates add-on by TomCat Tours. You can download this add-on via Curse Forge.

You must activate all four before they run out so you are almost certain to need another player to help. The Stranded Soul will appear, slay it to receive a Glowing Arcane Jewel. Turn this in for the reward. Also rewards Highland Drake: Spined Nose. |
